The Writing Quality Lens highlights four features of prose that are worth examining: passive constructions, hedging language, sentence length, and stock phrases. None of these is a rule. Passive voice is sometimes exactly right. A well-placed hedge can be intellectually honest. But patterns of all four together, unchecked, produce the kind of writing that doctoral supervisors annotate in red.
