Glossary of the Zingaro Tongue

Zingaro — from the derogatory Italian for Gypsy, itself derived from the Byzantine Greek Athinganoi — was the name given to the Romani language as spoken by the travelling people of Britain. Sometimes called the Romany tongue or simply “the cant of the Egyptians” in early modern English, it was documented with a mixture of fascination and suspicion by writers who encountered the Romani communities on the roads and commons of the British Isles.

This glossary preserves a language in motion. A tongue of Indian origin carried westward across centuries and absorbing words from Persian, Greek, Turkish, and the European vernaculars as it travelled, yet retaining a remarkable grammatical core. Panee (water), rook (a tree), chavo (a son) — roots still audible in modern Romani dialects spoken across Europe today.
